Established in 1860 as a School of painting, which became in 1864 the National School of Belle Arts according to the Western model, the first institution of higher level in the Romanian art education has functioned continuously until now, despite the times of communism, when the Academy of Fine Arts from Iasi (with the title adopted in 1931) was transformed into the Faculty of Drawing (1950), and then into the Faculty of Fine Arts (1978). Since 2012 it has been named the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design.
The Faculty of Visual Arts and Design belongs to the ensemble of three faculties integrated within “George Enescu” National University of Arts, public institution of higher artistic education, part of the national education system, accredited under the law, with the qualification “High degree of confidence”, classified as a university of education and scientific research. The Faculty of Visual Arts and Design has the mission to train specialists as visual artists or theorists to participate creatively in contemporary cultural life.
The Faculty of Visual Arts and Design is in category A in the national ranking. It is the only higher education institution in Romania in the QS Global World ranking 2018 Top – Art and Design field.

Professional Master’s degree in Visual Arts over 2 years, with the following specializations:

Doctoral studies represent the third cycle of studies offered by UNAGE with the purpose of expanding artistic creation and research, multidisciplinarity and the internationalization of the entire educational approach.
Doctoral school in Visual Arts is part of I.O.S.U.D – UNAGE Iasi, evaluated by High Level Experts Group of Romanian Education Ministry. It operates since 2007 within the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design, aiming to train specialists, creators, and theorists, in the field of visual arts, to align the artistic and scientific research in the Romanian higher artistic education to a European level, to contribute to the development of Romanian and universal culture.
The graduates of the PhD School of Visual Arts can subsequently capitalize on their accumulated theoretical and practical knowledge, thus creating a necessary bridge to the higher research at the post PhD level on the valorization of plastic creation in the visual artistic field.
There are two types of doctoral studies programs.
Scientific doctorate, which aims at producing original, internationally relevant scientific knowledge based on scientific methods; the scientific doctorate is a condition for professional career in higher education and research; the scientific PhD is based on creative research and advanced scientific study, which contributes to the development of cognitive and artistic knowledge, skills and abilities; it is a PhD of reserach performance, representing a significant and original contribution that produces innovative knowledge in the field of reference – Visual Arts
Professional doctorate, in the field of Visual Arts, which aims at producing original knowledge based on the application of the scientific method and systematic reflection on high-level national and international artistic creations and which can constitute a basis for a professional career in higher education and research; the university studies of the professional PhD can be followed by practitioners of the visual arts affirmed at national and international level, whose artistic activity is visible and has a distinct identity that can be integrated into an original concept, of theoretical scope and artistic practice.
